The colour of the skin is the result of a subtle combination of pigments originating from quantitative and qualitative variations of melanin pigment. There are two main families of pigements:

- brown or black , known as eumelanins

- yellow orange known as phaeomelanins

Melanogenesis refers to the production of these melanin pigments.
